The first congress of the Viet Nam Federation on Disability (VFD) on Saturday in Ha Noi attracted 152 delegates.

Fifty one delegates were elected to the federation's executive committee for a five-year term, including chairwoman Dang Huynh Mai and deputy chairman Nguyen Huy Ban.

Mai said the federation's goal was to connect associations and to support and protect the rights of the disabled nation-wide and help them integrate with the community. It would represent their interests in international conferences and promotion of disabled issues, she said.

The federation was established following a Ministry of Home Affairs decision in October. The congress was attended by Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan, former vice president Truong My Hoa, former deputy minister of education and training Dang Huynh Mai.

Statistics show there are 6.7 million disabled people in Viet Nam. - VNS
